To make sure nothing casts a shadow over your trip, let us help you with a few important tips. At what point am I considered a camper (wild camping), and up to what point am I still just parking? The legal distinction between simply parking a RV (which is legal in most places) and actually camping (which qualifies as wild camping and is punishable) depends on your activities outside the vehicle and any equipment you set up. -Nothing protrudes from the vehicle beyond its basic dimensions. -Do not open the side roll-out awning. -Do not set up camping furniture (chairs, table) next to the vehicle. -Do not use support legs or leveling wedges. -Do not open the pop-up windows so that they extend beyond the vehicle’s outline. -In Hungary, spending the night outdoors in nature reserves (bivouacking) outside of designated campgrounds is strictly prohibited and punishable by law. Always use designated campgrounds or official RV parking areas! -The rules regarding wild camping in Europe vary greatly from country to country, ranging from strict prohibitions to complete freedom. In general, the northern part of the continent is the most permissive, while southern and western countries mostly prohibit spending the night outdoors. There are three main regulatory categories. Scandinavian freedom: In Sweden, Norway, and Estonia, the law guarantees the right to roam freely in nature. Strict prohibition: In Italy, Spain, Greece, Croatia, and Austria, wild camping is severely penalized. Zoned or restricted permits: In Germany, Switzerland, and France, it is permitted only in designated areas, above a certain altitude, or as bivouacking.
