Bükk and Aggtelek
Cool morning forests, stalactite caves, stargazing in the clearing.
Day 1: Eger’s Historic Atmosphere and Wines
Daytime itinerary: Arrive in Eger. Park on the outskirts of town or near the campground, as the city center can be tight for RVs. Visit Eger Castle, take a stroll through Dobó Square, and check out the Minaret. In the afternoon, head to Szépasszony Valley.
Food tip: Sample Eger’s “bikavér” and local wines at the iconic wine cellars in Szépasszony Valley.
Overnight stay: Tulipán Campground (Eger). It’s close to Szépasszony Valley, set in lush greenery, and offers guests electrical hookups and RV service facilities.
Day 2: Szilvásvárad and the Szalajka Valley
Daytime itinerary: Drive over to Szilvásvárad, located at the western foot of the Bükk Mountains. You can conveniently park your RV in the village’s large, paid central parking lot. Head to the Szalajka Valley: take the Forest Railway up to the Fátyol Waterfall, and check out the Istállós-kői Cave and the trout-filled lakes.
Food tip: Try the locally smoked or grilled trout at one of the charming snack bars in the valley.
Overnight Accommodation: Menedék Camping (Szilvásvárad). A quiet, nature-oriented campground right near the entrance to the Szalajka Valley, ideal for RVs.
Day 3: Lillafüred and Lake Hámori
Daytime itinerary: Drive through the Bükk Plateau to Lillafüred. Important RV info: The mountain road between Szilvásvárad and Lillafüred is winding and steep; larger RVs (with a height of over 7 meters) require extra caution or a detour via Miskolc! Once you arrive in Lillafüred, admire the Palotaszálló Hotel and the Lillafüred Waterfall, and go boating on Lake Hámori. Visit the Anna or St. Stephen Caves.
Overnight accommodations: Éden Camping (Miskolctapolca) or Tavirózsa Kemping. Since overnight parking for RVs is limited in Lillafüred, it’s worth driving down to nearby Miskolctapolca, where you’ll find well-equipped campgrounds.
Day 4: Arrival in Aggtelek and the Baradla Cave
Daytime itinerary: Head north toward Aggtelek National Park. Arrive in Aggtelek. After parking your RV, take a short or medium-length tour of the world-famous Baradla Cave, which departs from the main entrance in Aggtelek. The cave’s monumental stalactite formations and the Hall of Giants offer an unforgettable experience.
Overnight stay: Baradla Campground (Aggtelek). Located right next to the cave entrance. A vast, grassy area with RV sites, electricity hookups, and clean restroom facilities.
Day 5: The picturesque village of Jósvafő and the Hucul horses
Daytime activity: Take a drive to the neighboring, fairytale-like village of Jósvafő (just a few kilometers away). Take a stroll through the historic old village, check out the lake-like Jósvafői Tengerszem, and visit the old mill. If time permits, visit the nearby Hutsul stud farm in the national park, where you can admire the small-statured horses living in their natural habitat.
