Tokaj-Hegyalja
Golden hills, dinners at wine cellars, leisurely mornings on the mountainside.
Day 1: Szerencs, the gateway to the wine region and chocolate
Daytime itinerary: Arrive in Szerencs. Park near Rákóczi Castle. Visit the charming Szerencs Castle and its beautiful park, as well as the famous Sugar Museum.
Food tip: Sample the artisanal local chocolates at the Bonbon Szerencs showroom.
Overnight accommodations: Fekete Gólya Water Tourism Center and Campground in Tiszalök (south of Szerencs on the banks of the Tisza), or head straight into the town of Tokaj to the Tiszavirág Campground.
Day 2: The Town of Tokaj and the Confluence of the Rivers
Daytime activities: Head toward the town of Tokaj. Park in one of the large parking lots along the Bodrog River. Take a stroll through the historic downtown, and visit the Tokaj Museum and the World Heritage Wine Museum. In the afternoon, take a pleasant walk at the confluence of the Bodrog and Tisza rivers, or take a boat tour on the Bodrog.
Foodie tip: Visit the famous Hímesudvar Winery, where the owners themselves will show you how wine is made.
Overnight accommodation: Tiszavirág Campground and Marina (Tokaj). Located right on the banks of the Tisza, this well-equipped, RV-friendly site offers electrical hookups and water access.
Day 3: Bodrogkeresztúr and the stunning panorama
Daytime activity: Drive over to neighboring Bodrogkeresztúr. Take a walk (or, depending on the size of your RV, drive up carefully) to the lookout point above the Lebuj Bend or to the Keresztúr Treasure Chest, which offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Bodrog floodplain. Be sure to visit the local Borecet Manufaktúra as well.
Food tip: Enjoy a delicious meal at the Lebuj Cellar and Restaurant on the banks of the Bodrog, where you can sample traditional fish dishes from the Tisza River.
Overnight Accommodation: Márton Estate and Campground (Dereszla Campground, Bodrogkeresztúr). A cozy, family-friendly winery campground where you can spend the night in your RV right next to the grapevines.
Day 4: Tolcsva and the Secrets of the Castles
Daytime itinerary: Head north on Route 37 to Tolcsva, one of the wine region’s most important historical centers. Visit the beautifully restored Helia-D Herba Castle, where a medicinal herb garden and an exhibition on the history of cosmetics await you, or the magnificent Szirmay-Waldbott Castle.
Foodie tip: Tolcsva is home to the Grand Tokaj Winery, a museum-like cellar that houses aszú wine—a must-see for any wine lover.
Overnight Accommodation: Rákóczi Guesthouse and Campground (Tolcsva). A quiet, clean campground with an enclosed courtyard, ideal for a peaceful night’s sleep in the heart of the village.
Day 5: Sárospatak, the “Athens on the Bodrog”
Daytime itinerary: Arrival in Sárospatak. You can conveniently park your RV in the large parking lots next to the castle or in the adjacent ones. The main attractions are the magnificent, Renaissance-style Sárospatak Castle (Rákóczi Castle) and the Red Tower. In the afternoon, take a trip to the nearby, stunning Megyer Hill Lake (accessible on foot from the parking lot).
Overnight accommodation: Végardó Spa and Campground (Sárospatak). A huge advantage is that campground guests have direct access to the Végardó thermal baths, so at the end of the day, you can soak in the thermal waters in the comfort of your RV.
Day 6: Sátoraljaújhely and Extreme Adventures
Daytime activities: Head to Sátoraljaújhely, located near the Hungarian-Slovak border. Make your way to Zemplén Adventure Park, one of the country’s most exciting adventure centers. Here you can try the zip line, the bobsled track, the extreme rope course stretching between two mountains (Zemplén Adventures), or walk across the world-record-breaking National Unity Bridge (a suspension bridge).
